Refuse/Recycling
Washington Township contracts with Rumpke of Ohio Inc. for waste disposal services for unincorporated residents, effective March 1, 2005. (Rumpke also provides these services to Dublin and Columbus residents.) Benefits to residents who receive this service include reduced rates, recycling and yard waste collection services. The Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio provides for disposal of solid waste and composting of yard waste generated within the township.
Guidelines for Waste Disposal in the Unincorporated Township
Establish New Service
If you need to arrange for trash and recyclables collection with Rumpke, call (800) 828-8171.
Collection Containers
Please place your waste materials in sealed garbage or paper bags (strong enough to securely hold the contents), or plastic or metal cans. Closed cardboard boxes are acceptable for bulky or loose materials, however, Rumpke is not able to collect overloaded or wet boxes. To ensure driver safety, no container should weigh more than 50 pounds. Make taking out the trash a single trip to the curb with a Rumpke 95-gallon waste wheeler! Call (800) 828-8171 to order one.
Acceptable Garbage
Cooled ashes, rags, kitchen refuse, waste paper products, scrap wood and lumber (see Bulk Items below for instructions on bundling), household items, (weighing less than 50 lbs.) and household waste. Loose materials including rocks, and bricks can be placed in a waste container or box or bag provided it does not exceed 50 pounds.
Yard Waste
Place loose material such as grass clippings, garden refuse, and leaves in brown paper yard waste bags or in a waste container or box clearly marked "yard waste." Brush, branches, and sticks must be cut and tied in bundles not to exceed four feet in length. Christmas trees do not need to be cut up. Soil and sand must be in a container, box or bag and not exceed 50 pounds.
Bulk Items (bulky or heavy items)
Rumpke will collect bulk items on Wednesdays with your other items. Please cut bulk material such as boards, fencing, paneling and carpeting into four foot lengths and tie into bundles with a diameter not to exceed 18 inches. All other types of bulk materials should be collected as one piece. Please keep in mind that single items weighing more than 50 pounds may injure your driver. If an item is too heavy to load, your driver will tag the item with specific collection preparation information.
Uncollectible Wastes and Appliance Removal
Rumpke will not collect commercial waste such as automobile or truck parts, tree trunks and construction materials including broken concrete, household hazardous wastes, unquartered tires, lead acid batteries and items containing chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners or ice makers. If you would like to dispose of an item containing CFCs, please call Rumpke at 1.800.828.8171 to schedule CFC removal, as well as, collection and disposal of the item. The cost is $50.
Household hazardous waste can be disposed of at one of the collections sponsored by the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO). For a complete listing of the dates and locations, click here. What Can I Recycle?
Recycling allows you to help conserve landfill space, energy and natural resources. Your recyclable items can also be used to create many new products.
Rumpke Recycling will deliver one 18-gallon recycling bin to your home. Rumpke Recycling will collect your recyclables every Wednesday.
If you have more recyclable material than will fit in the bin provided, use a container of your own that is water and weatherproof, lightweight, durable, and does not have a lid. Separating recyclables is not necessary. They will be sorted at Rumpke's materials recycling facility (MRF). To see Rumpke's MRF, call (800) 828-8171 and schedule a free tour.
