Janell Thomas, Director of Parks & RecreationJanell Thomas

Parks & Recreation Director

An employee of Washington Township since 1985, Janell assumed her current role in 1991 when the Trustees established the Parks & Recreation Director position. She manages three parks: The Homestead, Ted Kaltenbach Park, and Amlin Crossing Park, plus eight regular and six seasonal staff.

Janell claims her most exciting job task has been the establishment of The Homestead, which opened in 1992. She was also instrumental in securing grant funding for recycled content waste receptacles and picnic tables at The Homestead and Kaltenbach parks.

Janell considers the position a natural progression of her childhood love of all things outdoors, when she swam, fished and boated on weekends. "I have grown up to appreciate the great outdoors and am lucky to have the opportunity to provide others the same kind of exhilarating experiences," she said.

When she's not managing the busy schedules and staff of Washington Township's parks and community center, she enjoys spending time with her family, working in her garden, and of course, camping, hiking and being outdoors. She is married, with three children and five grandchildren.

Janell holds a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from The Ohio State University (1977).
