The Washington Township EMS medical directors are responsible for all medical aspects of pre-hospital patient care. These two physicians have the authority to approve the level of pre-hospital care which may be rendered by each of the department members, establish and monitor compliance with field performance guidelines and establish and monitor training standards. The medical directors are available for medical direction for all critical patients 24 hours per day. They also guide the development and revision of protocols, medical standing orders, and continuing education programs and address equipment and legislative issues.

An EMS manager heads the EMS Division. The EMS Manager is responsible for fiscal management, complaint disposition, and compliance with all bulletins, orders, policy and procedures.

Personnel/Staffing

The EMS Division is integrated into and administered through the 150 member Washington Township Fire Department. As a result, all EMS personnel are also fire fighters experienced in a wide range of rescue techniques, extrication, fire suppression and mitigation of hazardous materials incidents. All fire fighters are specifically trained and respond to an increasing number and wide variety of incidents.

More than 90 state-certified EMT-Paramedics are available to staff the engine, ladder, rescue and medic units. This is a more than adequate supply of EMS trained personnel to meet current and projected community needs. The department staffs at least one paramedic on all Advanced Life Support (ALS) units and maintains a sufficient reserve pool to accommodate staffing and training requirements. The future supply of EMS personnel is ensured by the departmental requirement that all new members have both fire and EMS certifications.

Demand for Services

Historically one out of every 10 citizens will use EMS at least once during their lifetime. Each year there are approximately 3,000 EMS incidents involving over 2,500 patients or potential patients. On the average, EMS responds to a citizen call about every 175 minutes. Each EMS response is made by one of three Washington Township EMS Transport vehicles.

EMS incidents represent almost 70% of the public demand on the fire department for emergency services.
